Can ChatGPT Find Your Business? How to Audit Your Visibility in AI Search

marketing tips.
Here is a test worth running before you read another word about AI search. Open ChatGPT and type the question your best customer would ask. “Who’s the best personal injury lawyer in the Loop?” “Which dentists in Lincoln Park take new patients?” “Who does emergency furnace repair in Naperville?”
Then look at who shows up.
If it is you, good. If it is a competitor you have never worried about, you just learned something your analytics will never tell you. AI search sends no referral report. When ChatGPT or Google’s AI Overview recommends someone else, the lead does not bounce. It simply never arrives.
At Dabaran, our seven-step process opens with Discover and Evaluate for this reason. You cannot fix visibility you have not measured. Here is that first phase, in a form you can run yourself this afternoon.
Step 1: Write the Questions Customers Actually Ask
Most owners start by searching their own business name. That tells you nothing. Anyone searching your name already found you.
Write 10 to 15 questions a prospect asks before they know you exist. Mix three kinds: discovery (“best commercial real estate attorney in Chicago”), comparison (“which Chicago accounting firms work with startups”), and problem-first (“what to do after a car accident on the Kennedy”).
Then add neighborhood and suburb variations. Chicago search behavior is hyper-local. A query naming the West Loop and one naming Chicago return different businesses. Naperville and Evanston surface different sets again. Running clients out of both downtown and Orland Park, we see the city and suburban sides of this weekly, and the gap is wider than most owners expect. If every query on your list says “Chicago,” the audit is already incomplete.
Step 2: Run Each Query on Three Platforms
Run every query through ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google. Use a logged-out window so your own history does not skew the results.
Record four things: whether you appear, where in the answer, how you are described, and which sources the platform cited.
That last column is the one most people skip and the one that matters most. The cited sources show where the AI got its information, which tells you exactly where you are missing.
Step 3: Map the Pattern
Put it in a grid. Queries down the side, platforms across the top. The gaps sort themselves out fast.
Visible on Google but absent from ChatGPT usually points to weak Bing visibility, since ChatGPT’s search layer leans on Bing heavily. Missing everywhere means an entity problem: inconsistent business information, a neglected Google Business Profile, or service pages too generic to cite. Described wrong, with old services or a former address, means bad data about you is sitting on the web, and the AI likely found it.
Step 4: Study Whoever Beat You
For every query where a competitor appears and you do not, open the sources the AI cited. You will almost always find one of three things: a service page that answers the question in its first sentence, a mention in a local roundup or trade publication, or a Google Business Profile with far more reviews than yours.
This is the most useful hour of the exercise. You are not theorizing about what AI tools prefer. You are looking at what they chose.
Step 5: Close the Gaps, Then Recheck
Most findings trace to a short list. Move direct answers to the top of key pages. Clean up your name, address, and phone number across directories. Build out your Google Business Profile. Earn mentions in the publications these tools already cite.
None of it requires tricks, and that matters. We have run white-hat only since 2008, and the businesses getting burned right now bought their way into AI visibility with manufactured mentions. Generative Engine Optimization GEO done properly, is unglamorous list work, repeated every 60 to 90 days as answers shift.
What We Keep Finding

Across the AI audits we have run for clients, the surprise is rarely whether a business appears. It is who appears instead.
The business winning AI answers is usually not the market leader with the biggest ad budget. It is a smaller firm with a cleaner site and an active profile. A four-person dental practice in Logan Square can outrank a citywide chain in ChatGPT because someone there writes clear service pages and asks every patient for a review.
For a market this crowded, that is good news. Chicago AI visibility is still winnable, and whoever moves first will be hard to dislodge.
Where to Go From Here
The audit costs you an afternoon. Fixing what it turns up is where most owners want a hand, which is why our free audit is the front door rather than a sales call.
We have worked as an SEO agency Chicago businesses rely on since 2008, long enough to watch local search get rebuilt more than once. Panda, Penguin, mobile-first, the local pack. AI is the current rebuild, and clients who hired us as Chicago SEO experts for rankings now get AI visibility reported beside them.
So run the test at the top of this page. If your name comes back, you are ahead of most of your market. If it doesn’t, you now know exactly which gap to close first. Either way, send us the grid from Step 3, and we will tell you where to start.
