Google AI Overviews vs. ChatGPT vs. Perplexity: How Search Visibility Differs

marketing tips.
If you’ve checked whether your business shows up in AI search results, you may have noticed something frustrating. You might appear in Google’s AI Overview for a query but not in ChatGPT. Or Perplexity mentions your competitor, but Google’s AI doesn’t. That inconsistency isn’t random.
Each AI search tool finds, evaluates, and presents information differently. Understanding those differences is the key to building a strategy that covers all three rather than optimizing for one.
We’ve been testing visibility across all three platforms for our clients at Dabaran, where search engine optimization Chicago businesses rely on now means optimizing for AI as much as for Google. The patterns are clear enough to break down.
How Google AI Overviews Find Information
Google AI Overviews have one massive advantage: they’re built on Google’s existing search index. When an AI Overview generates an answer, it’s pulling from content Google already crawls, indexes, and ranks.
This means traditional SEO fundamentals directly influence whether your content appears. If your page is indexed, ranks well for relevant queries, and is eligible to display a snippet, it’s a candidate for citation. Google has confirmed there are no additional technical requirements beyond being eligible for Google Search.
It’s why GEO experts start with foundational SEO: crawlability, indexing, content quality, E-E-A-T signals, and structured data. Get those right and you’re already building toward AI Overview visibility.
Beyond that, Google’s AI favors content that directly answers the query, uses clear headings and extractable points, comes from authoritative sources, and is corroborated elsewhere. Pages that rank well but bury key information in dense paragraphs often lose out to competitors with cleaner formatting.
How ChatGPT Finds Information

ChatGPT works differently. Rather than pulling from a single index, it uses two layers: knowledge from its training data, and a real-time web search feature called ChatGPT Search built on a Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) pipeline.
When someone asks a business-related question, ChatGPT Search retrieves content from the web, ranks it by relevance and trust signals, extracts key information, and synthesizes an answer with citations. The retrieval layer is primarily Bing-powered. That detail matters: a business performing well in Google but weak in Bing may be underrepresented in ChatGPT’s answers.
ChatGPT is also highly selective. Getting mentioned requires strong entity signals, including consistent brand data across the web, presence on high-authority review platforms, inclusion in comparison articles, and content structured for extraction.
Training data still influences brand recognition, but that’s a diminishing strategy as real-time search becomes the primary source for current recommendations.
How Perplexity Finds Information
Perplexity functions as a real-time research engine, actively searching the web for every query and citing sources with direct links. It’s more transparent than ChatGPT about where answers come from, and more independent from any single search engine’s index than Google AI Overviews.
Perplexity crawls the web using its own systems alongside traditional search results. It places heavy emphasis on source attribution, favoring content that makes clear, specific, citable claims over general overviews.
Recency matters here more than on other platforms. Fresh content with specific data points, named sources, and structured formatting performs well. Older, generic content gets deprioritized even on high-authority domains.
Why You Appear in One but Not Another
Three factors drive the differences:
Data source divergence. Google AI Overviews pull from Google’s index. ChatGPT’s search layer is primarily Bing-powered. Perplexity uses its own crawling alongside multiple feeds. If your strategy only targets Google, you may have strong AI Overview visibility but weak presence elsewhere.
Signal weighting. Google AI Overviews weight traditional ranking signals and structured data. ChatGPT weights entity recognition and Bing visibility. Perplexity weights freshness and citation clarity.
Content format preferences. Google can synthesize from long-form content. ChatGPT favors concise claims from high-authority sources. Perplexity prefers specific, extractable facts. The same information formatted three ways might get cited on one platform and ignored on the others.
Building Visibility Across Every AI Platform
These three tools aren’t the only ones fielding questions about your business, and new ones keep arriving. Chasing each platform individually isn’t practical. Fortunately, it isn’t necessary either.
The signals overlap heavily. A strategy built on fundamentals covers the platforms that exist today and positions you for the ones that don’t exist yet.
Start with strong traditional SEO. Technical health, crawlability, content quality, and topical authority serve every platform without exception.
Build your off-site brand presence. Third-party mentions, comparison articles, review platform presence, and directory listings create the entity footprint AI tools reference when building answers.
Structure your content for extraction. Clear headings, standalone claims, direct answers. Every AI tool has to pull discrete information from your pages.
Publish consistently. Perplexity rewards freshness. Google rewards depth. ChatGPT Search picks up recent, well-structured content. Consistent publishing on focused topics serves all three.
Don’t ignore Bing. Bing’s index feeds ChatGPT Search. Most businesses optimize exclusively for Google and leave real AI visibility on the table. Bing Webmaster Tools is free and takes minutes to set up.
Maintain your entity signals. Consistent NAP data, active Google Business Profile, schema markup, and author attribution build the recognition AI platforms rely on.
Track where you actually appear. Run your key queries through multiple AI tools and document where you show up and where competitors show up instead.
The Visibility Gap Is the Opportunity
The Visibility Gap Is the Opportunity
Most businesses haven’t checked whether they appear in AI search results at all, let alone across multiple platforms. That’s an opportunity for anyone who takes it seriously.
At Dabaran, we audit client visibility across Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, and Perplexity as a standard part of our process. The gaps almost always reveal actionable fixes: content that needs restructuring, entity signals that need strengthening, or off-site presence that needs building. As an SEO company in Chicago with 17 years of search expertise, we’ve built our GEO capabilities on that same foundation. If your visibility is strong in one AI tool but missing in the others, that’s not a mystery. It’s a fixable problem with a clear path forward.
