If you’ve been paying attention to digital marketing conversations over the last year, you’ve probably heard someone say that SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is dead and GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the future. You’ve probably also heard someone else say GEO is just SEO with a new name. Both takes are incorrect and unhelpful.

The truth is more interesting. SEO and GEO are related but distinct disciplines, and understanding where they overlap and where they diverge is the key to building a search strategy that actually works in 2026 and beyond.

We’ve been working at this intersection with our clients for over a year now, and the patterns are clear enough to share.

What SEO Still Does (and Does Well)

SEO

Traditional SEO is the practice of optimizing a website to rank higher in search engine results pages. It covers technical accessibility, on-page optimization, content quality, link building, and local search signals. These fundamentals have driven online visibility for over two decades, and here’s the important part: they haven’t stopped working.

Google has been explicit on this point. Their current guidance states that foundational SEO remains essential for visibility in AI Overviews and AI Mode. The technical infrastructure that allows search engines to crawl, index, and understand your content is the same infrastructure AI tools rely on to evaluate it.

A website with strong technical health, well-structured content, clear topical focus, and a healthy backlink profile is positioned well for both traditional search and AI-powered search. Anyone telling you SEO doesn’t matter anymore is either trying to sell you something or hasn’t been paying attention.

What GEO Actually Is

GEO, or Generative Engine Optimization, focuses specifically on optimizing content and online presence for visibility in AI-generated responses. While SEO asks “how do I rank on page one,” GEO asks “how do I get cited when an AI tool assembles an answer?”

That distinction matters because AI tools evaluate content differently than traditional search algorithms:

  • Content structure for extraction. AI models don’t just rank pages. They pull specific claims, facts, and recommendations from them. GEO prioritizes organizing content into clear, standalone points that AI can extract without needing to interpret dense paragraphs.
  • Entity signals and brand identity. AI tools build an understanding of your business as an entity by cross-referencing information across the web. GEO strengthens those signals through consistent business data, schema markup, and a well-maintained Google Business Profile.
  • Third-party brand mentions and citations. AI models don’t just evaluate your own content. They evaluate what other sources say about you. GEO includes strategies for earning mentions in comparison articles, industry publications, and local directories that AI tools draw from when building answers.
  • Conversational query alignment. People phrase questions differently when talking to AI than when typing into Google. GEO maps your content to these natural, question-based queries rather than just short-tail keywords.

The Overlap Is Bigger Than Most People Think

Here’s something we tell every client who asks about GEO: as an SEO Agency Chicago businesses have trusted since 2008, we can confirm that if your SEO fundamentals are strong, you’re already halfway there. The Venn diagram between these two disciplines has a massive center.

  • Technical accessibility is shared territory. If your site can’t be crawled and indexed properly, neither Google nor AI tools can evaluate your content. Site speed, mobile optimization, clean URL structures, and proper sitemaps serve both channels equally.
  • Content quality is non-negotiable for both. Thin, generic, or outdated content underperforms in traditional search and gets skipped by AI tools. Deep, specific, well-researched content that demonstrates genuine expertise performs well everywhere.
  • Topical authority matters to both systems. A website that publishes consistently on a focused set of topics builds subject-matter authority that both Google’s algorithm and AI models recognize.
  • E-E-A-T signals feed both channels. Author bios, credentials, client testimonials, case studies, and transparent business information build trust with Google’s quality evaluators and with AI models deciding which sources to cite.

Google has essentially said it directly: if you’re doing SEO well, you’re already doing much of what’s needed for AI search visibility.

Where They Actually Diverge

The real differences show up in emphasis and additional tactics. GEO places heavier weight on a few specific areas:

Structured, extractable content. SEO rewards comprehensive pages. GEO rewards pages where key information is organized so AI can grab specific points without reading everything. Same great content, different architecture.

Off-site brand presence. Traditional SEO values backlinks. GEO values the broader pattern of where and how your brand is mentioned across the web, including unlinked mentions, comparison articles, and directory listings that AI tools reference.

Answer-oriented content. SEO content is often written to rank for a keyword. GEO content is written to directly answer a question an AI tool might field, in a format it can cite. The shift is subtle, but the results are measurable.

Local data ecosystem. For local businesses, GEO extends beyond the website to include Google Business Profile activity, review content, NAP consistency, and citation health as interconnected signals AI tools use when recommending businesses.

So, Which One Do You Need?

Both. That’s not a cop-out answer. It’s what the data shows.

We’ve seen this play out across our own client base. The clients whose content appears in both Google’s traditional results and AI-generated answers are the ones where SEO and GEO are working together as layers, not competing priorities. SEO builds the foundation: technical health, content quality, topical authority, and domain credibility. GEO extends that foundation into the AI search environment.

Investing in only one eventually costs you visibility in the other. A site with perfect GEO optimization but broken technical SEO won’t get crawled. A site with flawless traditional SEO but no structured, extractable content won’t get cited by AI tools.

At Dabaran, we are a generative AI Search Engine Optimization agency, and we stopped treating these as separate strategies a while ago. Every content plan, every technical audit, and every link-building campaign we run now accounts for both traditional rankings and AI citation potential. Not because it’s trendy, but because it’s what actually produces results across every channel where our clients’ customers are searching. If your current strategy only covers one side of that equation, the gap is already costing you visibility you can’t see in your analytics.
